A royal dress, high fashion in Denmark

Look at this beautiful dress, is it not amazing, when you really study it in detail! This very big painting from 1776 hangs at the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen/København. It is painted by the danish artist Virgilius Eriksen and is a portrait of The Queen Dowager Juliane Marie/Enkedronning Juliane Marie.

In paintings like this, from that period, the person is almost not important, it is all about the dress! I find that amusing. It is like a paper doll, but with much better clothes… (This photo show a part of the painting.)

For our modern eyes paintings like this often look a bit boring. But get close to it and focus on the details, then they will transform into somethings else. And you will see the amazing artist skill both of the painter and also of the “fashion designer”, and all the arts and crafts skill needed to do something like this dress. Probably not possible today?

(Yes, I have studied both art history and economic history and know there is a lot of other things you could read from a painting like this, but right know I focus on and enjoy the fashion part of it!)
